Dr Oscar Sanchez-Sibony

Dr Oscar Sanchez-Sibony is assistant professor at the Department of History in the University of Hong Kong. He is author of the award-winning book Red Globalization: The Political Economy of the Soviet Cold War from Stalin to Khrushchev, published by Cambridge University Press. He received his PhD in Russian history from the University of Chicago. At HKU he teaches courses on Russian and global history, often tracking the global cultural developments of music.

He firmly believes that a country’s epic history can be told as much through its music and other art forms of self-expression as through dry academic books. Russia, with its rich musical and cultural traditions, has scored many of the world-shaping events its own people have themselves orchestrated. And beyond national history, the music that emanated from Russia’s foremost composers has told universal stories of fervor, triumph, agony and revolution. Dr Sanchez-Sibony feels that Russia's history, as well as its art and culture, can be seen as both exceptional and typical of global trends--but often with an extra dose of passion. He is dedicated to telling both the particular story of Russia, and through it, the more general history of our world.
