PROGRAMME
SIBELIUS
The Swan of Tuonela
SIBELIUS
The Swan of Tuonela
Making a welcome return to Hong Kong after 7 years, American pianist André Watts leads us on an epic journey through the land of icy fjords and awesome mountain peaks as he ignites the Nordic fire and passion of Grieg’s massively popular Piano Concerto. Remaining in the icy north, conductor Andreas Delfs conjures up from the depths of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra one of the most beautiful birds in musical history, Sibelius’s Swan of Tuonela, which, according to legend, glides over the shimmering waters surrounding the mythical isle of the dead. Things get a lot more heated as we move to Russian and Stravinsky’s revolutionary ballet score inspired by another mythological bird, this time a blazing Firebird with its power to overcome a magician’s evil spell.
