Outstanding Chinese Violinist Huang Mengla meets with youngsters

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra is delighted to have invited brilliant Chinese violinist Huang Mengla to conduct a master-class for an audience of nearly a thousand teenagers on 10 April 2009 at 3pm at Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall. It gave an invaluable opportunity for the young people in Hong Kong to meet with this outstanding Chinese musician.

Three advanced violin students were invited to play in front of Huang Mengla, who gave inspiring insights and valuable opinions on their technique and practice. Below are the pieces played by the three students respectively:

HENRI VIEUXTEMPS Violin Concerto No. 4 in D minor, Op 31, 1st movement (Solo: Luu Cheuk-yin Clement)
TCHAIKOVSKY Violin Concerto in D major, Op 35, 1st movement (Solo: Wong Chun-hong)
PAGANINI Caprice No. 21 (Solo: Sit Tsz-ho)

"Huang Mengla conducts Violin Master-class" is free and open to the public. This master-class is supported by Drs. Richard Charles and Esther Yewpick Lee Charitable Foundation.

About Huang Mengla
Huang Mengla is one of the most active and promising young violinists of our time. His brilliant technique and unique interpretations have fascinated audiences throughout Asia, Europe and North America. In 2002, he won the First Prize at the prestigious Paganini International Violin Competition in Italy, where he also received the Renato De Barbieri Memorial Award for the best interpretation of Paganini's Caprices and the Mario Ruminelli Memorial Award.

Huang was born in 1980 in Shanghai and began to study violin at the age of 4. Admitted to Shanghai Conservatory at 8, his rare talent was recognised by Professor Lina Yu, one of the most well-known Chinese violinists and music educators, with whom he went on to study. In 2006 he received his master’s degree and became the youngest ever faculty member of Shanghai Conservatory of Music. In September 2006, he moved to London, and has undertaken further studies with Professor Gyorgy Pauk at Royal Academy of Music.

Mengla has worked with many of the world’s fine orchestras including Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart, Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, German National Philharmonic, NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Kyoto Philharmonic Orchestra, Macao Orchestra, Nice Philharmonic Orchestra, Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra, Sendai Symphony Orchestra, Beijing Symphony Orchestra and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra etc.
