Hong Kong, 31 Jan 2005 – Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO) held a musical instruments donation and presentation ceremony today to express gratitude for the sponsor and donors of seven highly valued instruments to the Orchestra over the years. Among them is the Antonio Stradivari 1701 "Markees", worth US$ 4.5 million and sponsored by the Music Chamber.
Guests to the ceremony were three sponsor and donors, including Mr. Mack Kar Kay Andy, Production Manager of Music Chamber, Mr. Laurence Scofield, and Mrs. Patrick Wang, who was representing Mr. Patrick Wang at the event. Officiating guests included Maestro Edo de Waart, HKPO Artistic Director and Chief Conductor, Dr. Geoffrey Yeh Meou-tsen, SBS, MBE, JP, Chairman of the General Committee of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Society; Mr. Edward Ho, Chairman Designate of the General Committee (Mr. Ho would take up the Chairman position beginning from 1 February 2005), as well as 8 members of the General Committee.
"On behalf of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Society, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to every donor and sponsor throughout the years for all their generous support, without which the Orchestra would not have flourished at the same pace and manner," said Dr. Yeh at the ceremony.
The most highly-valued instrument HKPO received thus far, the Antonio Stradivari 1701 "Markees was presented to HKPO’s First Associate Concertmaster, Mr. Leung Kin-fung, a renowned violinist and one of the "Ten Outstanding Young Persons" in Hong Kong in 2002. The Orchestra has also acquired other valuable instruments over the years. They include Joseph Gagliano 1788 Violin (donated by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Society Ladies Committee, played by Mr. Wong Sze-hang, Second Associate Concertmaster), Carlo Antonio Testore 1736 Violin (donated by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Society Ladies Committee, played by Mr. Ni Lan), Emile Germaine 1907 Violin (donated by Mr. Patrick Wang, played by Ms. Tomoko Tanaka Mao), Lockey Hill C 1800 Violin (donated by Mr. Lowell Chang, played by Mr. Chow Lap-chung), Dawne Haddad 1991 Violoncello (donated by Mr. Po Chung, played by Mr. Cheung Ming-yuen) and Ansaldo Poggi 1910 Violin (donated by Mr. Laurence Scofield, played by Ms. Zhang Xi).
The ceremony was held at the Cityplaza Atrium in Tai Koo Shing, drawing a large crowd who was keen to see the valuable instruments. Using the newly sponsored Antonio Stradivari 1701 "Markees", Mr. Leung gave a short performance at the ceremony together with Mr. Ni Lan, who was using his Carlo Antonio Testore 1736 Violin .
The 8 General Committee Members who attended the ceremony included Prof Chan Wing-wah, JP; Mrs. Janice Choi; Ms. Brenda Chow Kam-wah; Prof David Gwilt, MBE; Ms. Pansy Ho Chiu King; Mr. Rafael Hui Si-yan, GBS, JP; Mr. So Hau-leung and Dr. Tai Tak-fung, SBS, JP. The day was also the first public appearance of Ms. Ho, Ms. Hui and Dr. Tai as the General Committee Member since their appointments earlier.
