Norwegian Cello Virtuoso Truls Mork Performs Three Distinct Cello Works

2005-05-25

【Hong Kong, 25 May 2005】 –Truls Mork, one of today’s greatest cellists, will collaborate with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO) in three works by Elgar, Brazilian composer Villa-Lobos and Bach, showcasing the different facets of personality of the instrument. Under the baton of HKPO Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Edo de Waart, Cathay Pacific Discovery Series – Cello World will be held in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall on 10 and 11 June 2005 (Fri & Sat) at 8pm, followed by a meet-the-artist session with Truls Mork on 11 June.

Truls Mork’s reputation as a cellist of fierce intensity and grace has been built upon performances with renowned orchestras in and appearances at major festivals. The Guardian praised him, “Mork is an outstanding cellist… Unfailingly communicative, he made every note tell.” The Norwegian cellist has won such prestigious awards as the Naumberg (1986) and Tchaikovsky (1982). His extensive recordings have received critcal acclaims and recognition, including a Grammy in 2002. He plays on a rare Domenico Montagnana (1723) bought for him by SR Bank in Norway. His official website is <www.trulsmork.com>.
With a vast range encompassing both the rich depths and the sweetest heights, the cello is the most expressive of instruments. This concert explores every facet of the cello’s personality, from the deeply personal contemplations of Bach, through the seductive sounds of Brazilian composer Villa-Lobos, to the heart-on-sleeve passion of Elgar’s beloved Cello Concerto.

Bach’s Cello Suite No. 3, a solo work, features some of the composer’s most searching music, especially in the Sarabande movement. Brazillian composer Villa-Lobos’ series of nine Bachianas brasileiras is his most famous legacy, where seductive Brazilian idioms are wedded to harmonic and contrapuntal techniques derived from the Baroque (hence the homage to Bach). Bachianas brasileiras No. 5, a mid-scale work, to be performed in the upcoming concerts, was scored for soprano and eight-part cello ensemble, The large-scale work of Elgar’s Cello Concerto is an eloquent song that flows straight from the heart. No instrument could better express the wistful melody of the composer’s last masterpiece than the cello. Completing the programme is Handel’s Concerto Grosso in A minor, Op. 6 No. 4.

Audiences of the 11 June performance will have the opportunity to meet and converse with Truls Mork, who will appear in a meet-the-artist session after the concert.

The concerts are sponsored by Cathay Pacific. Tickets are now available at URBTIX at HK$400, $300, $200, and $100, through reservation at 2734 9009 (URBTIX) or Credit Card Booking at 2111 5999 (Cityline). For enquiries, please visit www.hkpo.com or call 2721 2030.
