14-year-old Rachel Cheung debuts with Edo de Waart

2006-01-05

Hong Kong, 5 January 2006 – Rachel Cheung, Hong Kong's 14 year-old piano prodigy and star pupil of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts Junior Programme, will debut with Maestro Edo de Waart. On 13 and 14 January, she will play Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.4 with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO). Kathy Lam and Ben Pelletier, programme hosts of RTHK Radio 4, will be presenters at the concerts. ‘Rachel Cheung - A Rising Star' is title sponsored by The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation and sponsored by Campbell Soup Asia Limited.

At 14 years of age, pianist Rachel Cheung is one of the brightest young stars of Hong Kong, winning numerous prizes in both local and international musical competitions: First Prize in the Instrumental Solo Under 15 category, Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod (2002); First Prize, Best Youngest Competitor, Best Concerto Performance, and Best Performance in Romantic Music at the International Competition for Young Pianists (Junior Group) in Memory of Vladimir Horowitz (2003), as well as First Prize and Most Popular Finalist at the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition (ages 11-13, 2004).

With a string of successful recital and concerto appearances to her credit, she performs Beethoven's lyrical and poetic Fourth Concerto, with Edo de Waart for the first time in this concert with an emphasis on youth. The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra gives every section of the orchestra its moment of glory, while the intergalactic film-score by Academy Award winning composer John Williams ends the concert in a blaze of brass.

Born in a musical family, Kathy Lam was a student at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts Junior Music Programme and has won numerous awards in piano performance at the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival and Cheltenham Competitive Festival, UK. She graduated from Columbia University with a master ' s degree in Arts Administration.

Ben Pelletier pursues a dual career as a musician and broadcaster . Ben studied trombone at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, and furthered his studies at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music in Houston, Texas. Based in Hong Kong, Ben has established an active performing career spanning the classical, jazz, and commercial music worlds. He has served as band leader and trombonist for numerous West End/ Broadway-style productions and has performed and recorded with several of Asia's leading pop stars.
