Hong Kong, 25 September 2006 – Russian Violin superstar Vadim Repin will perform Beethoven's Violin Concerto on his precious 1736 Guarneri del Gesù ‘von Szerdahely' violin, with Edo de Waart conducting the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. In the same evening, audiences will also be able to enjoy Berlioz's symphonic masterpiece, Symphonie Fantastique, and Beethoven's Coriolan Overture. "Swire Maestro Series: De Waart meets Vadim Repin" will be held on 6 and 7 October (Friday and Saturday) at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall at 8pm.
Prior to every concert in the Swire Maestro Series – six pair of concerts in the 2006/07 Season featuring leading conductors and soloists in major symphonic works of the symphonic repertoire – the Hong Kong Philharmonic is also introducing a series of talks, entitled Swire Classic Insights. They will take place on the level 4 foyer of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre from 7.15 to 7.45pm. Musicologist Maureen Buja will give the talk in English on Friday, and RTHK Radio 4 producer Jimmy Shiu will speak on Saturday in Cantonese. The talks are open to the public and are free of charge.
Born in Siberia in 1971, Vadim Repin became the youngest ever winner of the most prestigious and demanding violin competition in the world in 1987, the Reine Elisabeth Concours. Since then he has appeared with the world's greatest orchestras under the baton of today's leading conductors. Hong Kong audiences might still remember Repin's first appearance with the Hong Kong Philharmonic in June 1998 as the replacement for an indisposed soloist, playing Sibelius' Violin Concerto. After his dazzling performance, HKPO invited him to perform for a second time in April 2000 Bruch's Violin Concerto No.1 in G minor. This will be the first time Vadim Repin performs with the HKPO since Edo de Waart became the Hong Kong Philharmonic's Artistic Director and Chief Conductor in 2004.
Dr. Maureen Buja's talk for Swire Classic Insights is entitled Pictures in Music, a common theme that links the works performed in these concerts. "The three works on the programme all portray different images in our minds through music including the turbulent passions of Coriolan and a jumbled dream on the power of love (Symphonie Fantastique). The discussion will lead listeners through the pictures painted by the composers and how they can bring us into a greater understanding of the music," said Dr. Buja.
Maureen Buja is Resident Musicologist for the Hong Kong–based Naxos Digital Services Limited. She received her doctorate from the University of North Carolina with additional studies at the University of Illinois and Columbia University. She has been music book editor for Oxford University Press in New York and editor for Macmillan in London (working on The New Grove Dictionary of Opera.) Dr. Buja has taught musicology at Columbia University and the University of Hong Kong. She has published three books on Renaissance music and is currently Editor-in-Chief of Fontes Artis Musicae, the journal of the International Association of Music Libraries.
Jimmy Shiu is a producer and presenter of RTHK Radio 4. He received his Bachelor's degree from the Hong Kong Baptist University, where he majored in composition, violin and voice. Later, he furthered his studies at Sheffield University in the UK and graduated with a double Masters in composition and voice. Jimmy enjoys sharing his love of music as a radio presenter, a performer and a speaker. He has published several books on music appreciation.
