SWIRE EXTENDS 'A SOUND COMMITMENT' TO
THE HONG KONG PHILHARMONIC
FOR A FURTHER THREE YEARS

11 September 2008

Hong Kong, 11 September 2008 – Immediately following the highly successful opening of the Hong Kong Philharmonic’s 2008/09 season, the Swire group has announced its commitment to continue as Principal Patron of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO) for a further three years until 2012.

Edward Ho, Chairman of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Society, thanked the Principal Patron for its generous support. "We are thrilled that Swire is demonstrating such visionary civic leadership by making this very significant commitment to the Hong Kong Philharmonic and our Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Edo de Waart. With Swire’s generous support, the Orchestra has been able to touch the lives of far more people in Hong Kong.”

Maestro de Waart expressed his sincere gratitude to Swire for their past support and for extending into the future. “Swire is an incredibly wonderful sponsor. They have enabled us to get where we are today, to pursue artistic excellence, to broaden our programs and to reach the widest possible audience. And now they will underpin the next phase of our growth, which is a resounding endorsement for us and an inspiring challenge to keep up the momentum.”

Christopher Pratt, Chairman of Swire Pacific Ltd., said: "It is an honour to be involved in the continued growth of one of Asia's leading orchestras and to assist in their mission of bringing world-class music to people from all walks of life. In so doing, we hope to help raise Hong Kong's cultural profile on the international stage, foster the artistic development of our highly-talented local classical musicians, and enrich the lives of the people who have helped our businesses grow".

Since Swire became the Hong Kong Philharmonic’s Principal Patron in 2006, the Orchestra has been able to attract excellent guest conductors such as Jiří Bělohlávek, Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony, Mark Elder and David Zinman to contribute to the artistic development of the Orchestra and to offer exciting performances to the public. In addition, the Orchestra has greatly expanded its education and community outreach programs through such initiatives as free, open-air concerts, adult education seminars, recordings and pre-concert talks.

Swire's sponsorship will continue to facilitate HKPO's vision to become the region's leading orchestra, bringing world-class artists to share the stage with the Orchestra, showcasing outstanding young Chinese artists, as well as holding a series of adult educational activities that will increase the public's enjoyment and appreciation of classical music.
