Hong Kong, 14th November 2008 - Mr YS Liu, businessman, violinist and philanthropist, has been elected Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Society.
Mr Liu has been a member of the Board of Governors since November 2006 and has served on the Society's Finance Committee over the last two years. An accomplished violinist, he has regularly performed as Concertmaster of the SAR Philharmonic Orchestra in their annual concerts which serve as fund-raising opportunities for numerous Hong Kong social welfare charities.
"I am deeply honoured to become Chairman of Hong Kong's flagship orchestra, especially at a time when the Orchestra's reputation has risen so impressively under the direction of Maestro Edo de Waart," said Mr Liu following his election. "In a time of great economic uncertainty, the Board's focus will be to ensure the financial stability of this great cultural institution while continuing the upward artistic trajectory of Maestro de Waart's vision."
Mr Liu assumes the Chairmanship from Mr Edward Ho whose stewardship of the Philharmonic's Board for almost four years has overseen enormous growth in audiences and sponsorships, especially the establishment of the Principal Patron relationship with Swire for a total of six years from 2006 to 2012, and also the extension of Maestro de Waart's contract as Artistic Director and Chief Conductor until 2012.
The new Chairman paid tribute to Mr Ho saying, "The Orchestra has benefited greatly from Edward's dedication, wisdom and hard work, making him a very hard act to follow! The entire Board has warmly expressed its deep gratitude to Edward for his superb work as our Chairman during this remarkable period of growth."
Vice-Chairman Mr SM Chung was re-elected by the Board to continue to serve in this capacity having first been elected Vice-Chairman in 2006.
Five new members joined the Board of Governors as appointees of the Government of the Hong Kong SAR:
Mr Lam Woon Kwong
Professor CC Liu
Mr Benedict Sin
Mr Kenny Wong
Mr David Zacharias
