[Hong Kong 7 September 2009] Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO) proudly presents “The singing actress – Anna Caterina Antonacci” on 25&26 Sep 2009 (Fri & Sat), 8pm at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. In this concert, two of the greatest interpreters of Berlioz – American conductor John Nelson and Italian maverick soprano Anna Caterina Antonacci will shine on stage singing the composer’s dramatic La mort de Cléopâtre and Haydn’s remarkably theatrical cantata Arianna a Naxos.
Gramophone drama queen Anna Caterina Antonacci
“complete stage animal” by Sir John Eliot Gardiner
Embracing both soprano and mezzo-soprano roles, Anna Caterina’s extraordinary vocal timbre and great acting skills have enabled her to perform many works, notably her collaboration with Sir John Eliot Gardiner at the Théâtre du Châtelet, where she performed Cassandre in Les Troyens. She was described by Maestro Gardiner as “a complete stage animal” and was featured by the Gramophone as “drama queen” on the cover. Her another personal triumph was the new production of Carmen at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden with Antonio Pappano in 2006 [Click HERE for highlights from Carmen]. On 25&26 Sep, she will sing Berlioz’s La mort de Cléopâtre and Haydn’s remarkably theatrical cantata Arianna a Naxos. La mort de Cléopâtre has established itself in the repertoire as much as anything else for its vivid portrayal of the agony of the Egyptian Queen as she prepares herself for suicide by clasping a venomous snake to her bosom, while Arianna a Naxos was an ancient tale of the daughter of the King of Crete, Princess Ariadne, who has been abandoned on Mount Naxos by her lover, Theseus.
