Celebrate the Christmas and New Year with the Philharmonic

26-11-2009

[26 November 2009 – Hong Kong] Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO) celebrates the festive seasons with you every year. This Christmas, the Hong Kong Children’s Choir will join us again in bringing two joyful concerts with popular Christmas carols for families. To pop the cork on 2010, the HKPO recreates the very first Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s concert which Strauss waltzes and champagne mix in a perfect cocktail of good cheer.

Christmas with the Philharmonic (23&24 Dec)

As the Haydn and Handel anniversary year draws to a close, the music of these two great 18th Century masters forms the heart of the Hong Kong Philharmonic’s Christmas concerts, with enchanting winter music from Haydn’s oratorio The Seasons and a suite of arias and choruses from Handel’s nativity oratorio Messiah. Other festive works in the programme include Handel’s well known Royal Fireworks Music and Water Music Suite No. 2, Michael Haydn’s Pastorello, Leopold Mozart’s Toy Symphony, and many more Christmas carols. Under the baton of world-renowned conductor Philip Pickett, Australian soprano Sarah Crane brings silver-toned beauty to the florid soprano parts and the Hong Kong Children’s Choir brings the evening to a rousing conclusion with a selection of timeless Christmas pieces.

Viennese New Year’s Gala (30&31 Dec)

For 70 years, Vienna has celebrated the New Year with a joyous concert of waltzes, polkas and marches composed by the ultimate Viennese band-leader Johann Strauss Jr and his contemporaries, performed in the gilded magnificence of the Musikverein. Viennese conductor Johannes Wildner recreates the very first Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s concert conducted by Clemens Krauss.

Dress up for the New Year! Our on-site photographer is ready to capture the special moment of waltzes, champagne and good cheer. Dress up in your all-time favourite ballroom attire, latest fashion style from Europe, or true Viennese style formal dresses from the 13th century!
