[6 August 2010 – Hong Kong] The curtain will rise on the 2010/11 season of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO), titled A Season of Bravo, announces its 2010/11 season with a magnificent operatic spectacular featuring four superb Chinese opera stars under the baton of Maestro Edo de Waart.
‘HKPO Season Opening Gala Concert” will be held on 2 September 2010 (Thu), 8:00pm at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall. A pre-concert talk, free to the public, will be held on the Cultural Centre Level 4 Foyer at 7:15pm.
‘HKPO Season Opening Gala Concert” features four of today’s most brilliant and respected Chinese opera stars including soprano Liping Zhang whose magical performance of Rusalka in Song to the Moon has been described “as if fashioned by the Gods”, mezzo-soprano Ning Liang, the first Chinese singer ever to perform at Milan’s La Scala opera house, Hong Kong’s very own international tenor Warren Mok and bass-baritone Shen Yang, who won the prestigious BBC Cardiff Singer of the World in 2007. Together, they promise an evening of musical spectacles with some of Mozart, Puccini, Bizet and Dvořák’s most popular arias selected from the beloved operas such asNessun Dorma from Turandot, Habañera from Carmen, Vissi d’arte from Tosca and many more.
Born in Wuhan, Chinese soprano Liping Zhang came to international attention in the role of Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly, which she has sung at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera, and the Opéra national de Paris, among others. In March 2010, she was invited by Andrew Lloyd Webber to appear in his new musical Love Never Dies’s London début. Recently, she has sung the Chinese version of the theme song in the Asian edition album of the musical on Polydor. Liping Zhang teaches at the Voice and Opera Department of the Central Conservatory of Music.
The first Chinese singer ever to perform at Milan’s La Scala, mezzo-soprano Ning Liang has appeared in many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Berlin State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Royal Opera, Covent Garden and the Bavarian State Opera, among others. Her début at the Metropolitan Opera as Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier was broadcast worldwide and she returned in 2007 for the world première of Tan Dun's The First Emperor.
A Hong Kong Chinese tenor with a distinguished international career, Warren Mok has been making frequent guest appearances throughout the world, including Deutsche Opera Berlin, Opéra national de Paris, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Opera Australia in Sydney Opera House, among others. His operatic repertoire exceeds 60 roles including Calaf (Turandot), Cavaradossi (Tosca), Rodolfo (La Bohème), Romeo, Faust, Werther, and many others. Warren Mok is the Founder & Artistic Director of Opera Hong Kong and has been the Artistic Director of Macau International Music Festival since 2000.
Born in Tianjin, young Chinese bass-baritone Shen Yang is the winner of the 2007 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World. He received the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award in 2008 and made his Metropolitan début as Masetto in Don Giovanni in April 2009. His recording of Schubert's Winterreise (Chinese Première) was released by FengLin Records. In 2010, he becomes the Montblanc New Voices at Stars of the White Nights at the Mariinsky. Shen Yang teaches at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
