[29 December 2010 – Hong Kong] The world renowned Italian opera conductor Carlo Rizzi and soprano Anna Caterina Antonacci will join forces with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO) in an all-French programme featuring Berlioz’s vocal piece Les nuits dété, Ravel’s Alborada del Gracioso and Debussy’s Images.
Swire Maestro: “The Drama Queen’s Summer Nights” will be held on 28&29 Jan (Fri & Sat), 8pm at Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall. Free pre-concert talks “Swire Classic Insights” will be held on both nights, 7:15pm at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Auditoria Building 4/F Foyer.
Carlo Rizzi, conductor
Named as “one of the leading conductors of his generation” he has appeared with the greatest orchestras of the world including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the London Symphony, the London Philharmonic, the Philharmonia Orchestra of London and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the Orchestre National de France, the Orchestra of La Scala, Milan, and the NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo to name a few. Maestro Rizzi is in great demand in the finest opera houses of the world as well and is a frequent conductor at Teatro La Scala Milano, the Metropolitan Opera New York, London’s Royal Opera Covent Garden, Theatre de La Monnaie Brussels as well as Zurich Opera, Opera National de France Bastille, and the Netherlands Opera. In the 10th season of the BBC Proms he conducted the Orchestra of the WNO in their first symphonic Promenade concert.
Anna Caterina Antonacci, soprano
“Antonacci is without doubt one of the most fascinating talents on the opera stage today, a performer of extraordinary magnetism and allure.”
Embracing both soprano and mezzo-soprano roles, Antonacci’s extraordinary vocal timbre and great acting skills have enabled her to perform many works from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries including Monteverdi, Purcell, Handel, Gluck, Paisiello and Mozart. In 2006, Antonacci has made her début in a new production of Carmen at the Royal Opera House [Click HERE for highlights from Carmen], Covent Garden with Antonio Pappano. In her début with the HKPO in 2009, Antonacci allured the audience with her extraordinary vocal techniques in Berlioz’s Cléopâtre. She has also just been awarded the “Chevalier de l'Ordre National de la Légion d'honneur” by the French Republic, which is the highest national distinction one can receive. She now records for the Naïve label and her first recording of Era la Notte has received great acclaim.
Musical images of nights at home and abroad from three Frenchmen as seen through the eyes of two Italians. Maestro Rizzi leads you through the sights and sounds of Spain (with a little bit of northern England and central Italy thrown in for good measure) as depicted in two great orchestral showpieces from Ravel and Debussy. Following her extraordinary début with the HKPO last season, Antonacci demonstrates the truth behind the opinion of Les nuits d’été from a leading scholar, “Nowhere in Berlioz’s work has poetry, song and orchestral colour achieved so effortless a union”.
