Programme

Great Performers: "Osmo Vanska & Paul Lewis"

Maestro Osmo Vanska is joined by pianist Paul Lewis in Mozart's magical 23rd concerto – "A garden of delights, bathed in the sun of Mozart's inimitable creativity. Piano and orchestra were never more intimately combined than here, and even when clouds gather and the mood turns melancholy, there is still joy to be found in every single moment."

Beginning with a heavy funeral march Mahler sets a stern and sombre tone in his Symphony No.5. After this the storm breaks out, but Mahler is always pushing forward to a blazingly triumphant climax – inevitably, the sun will shine and the exhilaration of triumph, as only Mahler could express, will arrive. Before it does, though, he offers us perhaps his most treasured music, the Adagietto, which celebrates the tenderest, most intimate of emotions.

"Paul Lewis in Recital"

Paul Lewis returns to Hong Kong to bring new insight to the piano music of Schubert. Lyrical, melancholy, brimming with joy, whatever the mood, Schubert's music opens a door to Heaven. Over the course of two years, Paul Lewis is undertaking an epic world tour playing Schubert, a composer who was all but ignored during his lifetime – his story is among the most poignant of all composers. Now, works like the Moments Musicaux are acknowledged as masterpieces. Profound and touching, they will join the magnificent Six Impromptus and the towering drama of the Wanderer Fantasy in this recital programme.

Hailed as "unmissable", Paul Lewis' performances give true voice to Schubert. This recital promises emotion, honesty and superb pianism.
