Kodály, the renowned music educator and ethnomusicologist, declared that “[g]ood taste cannot be inherited, yet it can be spoilt very early in life. Consequently, education in the understanding of good music must be started as early as possible …”. The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra has devoted its efforts and resources to organize educational concerts for students from kindergartens to upper secondary schools. Their commitment in promoting classical music to young listeners should be warmly appreciated by the community which should strongly support it.

The Hong Kong Institute of Education, as the major provider of school music teachers in Hong Kong, is honored to be the educational partner of HKPO in the production of these Music Smart of HSBC Insurance Creative Notes. The activities are specially designed to enhance the listening experience of students, helping them to deepen their appreciation and understanding of the key musical concepts. While students can use the booklets for their own reading, teachers may use it to prepare their students for the HKPO concert experience. Teachers may also select relevant sections or activities as supplementary teaching resources to follow up on the concert experience.

With the joint endeavour by HKPO and HKIEd in promoting music education, it is hoped that students who benefit from this educational programme can develop a ‘good taste’ for music from an early age. We look forward to seeing young people who are nurtured to become discerning music listeners, music lovers and music makers. May music become their friend and intimate companion in a sonic bond that lasts a life time.

HSBC Insurance is proud to sponsor the “Music Smart” educational toolkit of the music-in-education programme “HSBC Insurance Creative Notes”. Through these selected programmes we hope to bridge over 50,000 kindergarten, primary, secondary and special school students to learn more about music appreciation and encouraging self-exploration of the charismatic beauty of music.

This year, three different programmes of repertoires are prepared for the schools concerts. The concerts focusing on the theme of “Hello, Orchestra!” will bring the students from kindergarten, lower primary and special schools to learn the “secret” ingredients of an orchestra. For upper primary schools to lower secondary students, they will explore the orchestra and its relationship with dancing through “Dance with Orchestra!” concerts. Students in the upper secondary schools will benefit from “Mozart and Copland! “ concerts which enable them to explore two works in greater depth, a classical symphony and a modern concert piece. It is our hope that these attractive programmes and repertoires will stimulate students’ imaginations and inspire them with a more rounded cultural education.

HSBC Insurance believes that music can enrich everyone’s life, improve both our physical and mental wellbeing. We are proud to help nurture Hong Kong’s future leaders by sowing the musical seeds and equipping these youngsters to reap lifelong rewards.

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO) would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Partnership Fund for the Disadvantaged, the Social Welfare Department of the HKSAR, participating sponsors, organizations, teachers, students and parents for supporting the “HSBC Insurance Creative Notes” programme.

“HSBC Insurance Creative Notes” programme has brought music and joy to over 50,000 local students this year through Schools Concerts, Ensemble Visits to schools by HKPO musicians, Instrumental Masterclasses, Chamber Music Concerts, Community Concerts and a range of other activities.
