Jonathan started playing the trumpet when he was 8 years old, after being inspired by listening to his local Big Band, The Bridgend College Orchestra. After taking a few lessons from the Music Director, Bill Davies, he was allowed to join the Band, which started a life long passion for music. Jonathan continued playing with the Bridgend College Orchestra until he was 18, and also became extensively involved in all the youth music of Mid Glamorgan and Wales. This led to the enrolment into the London's Trinity College of Music where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree, studying modern and Natural Trumpet with Robert Farley. He went on to receive a postgraduate diploma (performance) from the Royal Academy of Music In 2001, where he worked with Ian Balmain, James Watson and John Wallace.

Jonathan graduated in 2001, then he played in London with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the BBC Concert Orchestra as a freelance musician. He also worked extensively in 2001-2002 in the Netherlands, where he played Guest Principal with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Orkest Van Het Oosten. Here he worked with many great conductors and composers, including Edo de Waart, Alexander Lazarev, Jaap van Zweden, Gennadi Rhozdestvensky, Hans Werner Henze, John Adams and the late Hans Vonk.

To his delight in September 2003, he was appointed Principal Trumpet of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, where he has had the pleasure of performing fantastic works from many of Mahler's Symphony's to the great Richard Strauss Opera's.

Solo performances with the HKPO included Telemann's Concerto in D for trumpet, in Christmas with the Philharmonic in 2005, and in Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No.1 (with Warren Lee) in September 2003. Recent performances include RTHK recital broadcast in June 2004, with the University of Arizona's Brass Ensemble at the International Trumpet Guild in Bangkok in June 2005, and in March 2007 as Guest Principal with Manchester's Halle Orchestra. Jonathan is also an instructor at the HKAPA.
